A third-party logistic study conducted a study across 1,091 companies from various industries, dealing with 3PLs. As many as 77% of the surveyed organizations admitted that their relationship with their service provider could not be described as satisfactory (Langley and Capgemini 2005). The study concluded that the key factor in determining a successful relationship was whether client expectations were properly aligned with the 3PL business model and relationship structure. A further study conducted by Eyefortransport, 2012, looked at 3PL / user contract relationships and renewal, to find that about two thirds of companies still working with established 3PL partners after five years admitted that there was still much to be done to improve relationships between user and supplier for both parties. A more collaborative and strategic relationship is important, and sound management of the relationship is vital to succeed. The same study indicated that just over 50% of users renew more than three quarters of their 3PL contracts. Clearly, a substantial proportion of contracts are not renewed, and fail.
